Provably Fair Explained: How to Verify a Crypto Casino Bet Yourself

Updated 2026-10-27 · by BoosterHand Editorial

“Provably fair” is a method that lets you check, after a bet, that the result was fixed before you played and was not changed afterwards. It uses ordinary cryptography — no blockchain is required — and you can verify it yourself in a few minutes.

The three ingredients

IngredientWho sets itWhat it does
Server seedThe casinoA secret random value. Before you play you only see its hash (a fingerprint).
Client seedYou (or your browser)A value you can change at any time, so the casino cannot pre-select outcomes.
NonceCounterIncreases by 1 with every bet, so each bet gets a different result from the same seed pair.

The result of each bet is calculated from these three values, usually with HMAC-SHA256, and then converted into a game outcome (a dice number, a card, a crash multiplier).

Why the hash makes it fair

A cryptographic hash works in one direction: anyone can compute the hash from the seed, but nobody can find the seed from the hash. So:

  1. The casino commits to a server seed by showing you its hash before you bet.
  2. You play with your own client seed and the nonce.
  3. When you rotate (change) the seed pair, the casino reveals the old server seed.
  4. You hash the revealed seed. If it matches the hash you saw at the start, the casino could not have swapped it mid-session.

Because your client seed is mixed in, the casino could not have chosen a server seed that produces losing results for you either.

How to verify a bet step by step

  1. Before playing, open the game’s fairness panel. Copy the hashed server seed and set your own client seed (any text).
  2. Play as usual. Each bet shows its nonce in the bet details.
  3. Rotate the seed pair when you want to check. The casino reveals the previous server seed.
  4. Check the hash: put the revealed server seed into any SHA-256 tool. It must equal the hash you copied in step 1.
  5. Recalculate a result: use the casino’s verifier, or better an independent one, entering server seed, client seed and nonce. The outcome must match your bet history.

Tip: keep a note of the hashed seed. If you only look at it after rotating, you are trusting the casino’s own display.

What provably fair does — and does not — prove

It provesIt does not prove
The outcome was fixed before the betThat the game has a fair house edge or RTP
The casino did not change the result afterwardsThat the casino will pay out your winnings
Your client seed influenced the resultAnything about third-party slots, which use their own RNG

That last point matters: most slots and live casino games come from external studios and are not provably fair. They rely on the studio’s certified random number generator instead. Provably fair usually covers a casino’s own “originals” — dice, crash, plinko, mines, limbo.

How BoosterHand scores fairness

The fairness criterion is 10% of the BoosterHand Score. We check whether a casino documents provably fair for its originals, whether seeds can be changed by the player, and whether a verifier is provided. If a casino publishes nothing, the criterion counts as unknown (0) — we never assume. Compare casinos in the rating.

Key takeaways

  • Provably fair = the casino commits to a hidden seed before you bet, and reveals it afterwards.
  • Always set your own client seed and save the hashed server seed.
  • It proves results were not manipulated — not that the casino is solvent or will pay.
  • Licence and withdrawal record still matter more. See how to check a licence.
